Attiva dai primi anni duemila e figlia del leggendario Derrick Morgan, Queen Ifrica ha pubblicato in questi giorni il suo terzo album Climb. In vista del lancio del disco l’abbiamo intervistata per voi: una chiaccherata in cui non solo si è parlato del nuovo progetto discografico ma anche dei suoi inizi nel mondo della musica.

Iniziamo a parlare degli esordi. Quando hai iniziato a cantare?
Ho iniziato a cantare seriamente intorno gli anni 2000 ma sono stata su diversi palchi prima di allora.
Chi ti ha avvicinato alla musica e alla filosofia Rasta?
Mio padre è Derrick Morgan, leggendario cantante ska quindi immagino potrei dire che sia nata sulla sua stessa strada. La conoscenza che ho di Rastafari mi è stata impartita da mia madre “Mama Ita”, soprannome con cui veniva chiamata.
Qual’è stato il primo singolo che hai pubblicato?
È stato Royal Love, prodotto da Flames.
Hai fatto diverse collaborazioni con Tony Rebel. Ti ricordi quand’è stata la prima volta che vi siete incontrati? Come sono i vostri rapporti? Qual è il primo singolo che avete pubblicato insieme?
Dunque abbiamo avuto una chiamata “Bad Bwoy” prodotta da Sugar Roy. Il rapporto che ho con Tony Rebel è stimolante ed esaltante, ho imparato molto da lui in tutti questi anni e ho ancora tanto da imparare.
Quali sono le principali icone che ti influenzano maggiormente? E musicalmente parlando, qual è il periodo a cui guardi di più?
Garnet Silk e Bob Marley a mi ispiro molto dalla musica della vecchia scuola, rappresentano tutto il messaggio della musica.
Sono passati circa dieci anni da quando hai realizzato “Fyah Mumma”, debutto pubblicato per la Flame Producrions Inc e otto da che è uscito Montego Bay per la Vp Records. Hai particolari ricordi riguardo le composizioni/ registrazioni?
Vorrei poter avere quel cd qui mentre rispondo ma sicuramente prediligo Fyah Mumma. Montego Bay è stata una collaborazione tra la Vp assieme a noi e quelli della Penthouse e alcuni grandi musicisti.
E ora ti stai preparando per lanciare il tuo nuovo album. Cosa dovremmo aspettarci da “Climb”? Che tipo di album sarà?
Posso dirti che Climb parlerà di cambiamento, dell’ambiente circostante superando qualsiasi ostacolo che ti trattiene, semplicemente superali tutti, aspettatevi di essere motivati alla fine di ogni traccia!
Hai rilasciato un singolo da Climb, Trueversation, in collaborazione con Damian Marley. Puoi spiegarci il significato di questa canzone e perché hai scelto di cantarla con Damian
Con le influenze dei social media, le persone difficilmente parlano più tra di loro. È quasi sempre attraverso il cellulare o internet. Quindi diciamo di venire vicino per sederci, al chiuso o all’aperto. semplicemente per parlare, avere un dialogo.
La differenza in questo caso è che io e Gong abbiamo una “Trueversation” e non una Conversation, mi piace molto Gong e la musica che fa, e poi è il figlio di una Leggenda.
Quali sono i nuovi artisti che pensi rappresentino al meglio la nuova ondata di Roots Rock Reggae?
Si tratta di un vasto argomento di cui si dovrà parlare più approfonditamente.
E a quali artisti la nuova generazione dovrebbe ispirarsi?
Tutti. Hanno spianato la strada per tutti noi.
Stai preparando un tour per Climb? Quali paesi toccherà?

Active since the early years of this millennium and daughter of the legendary Derrick Morgan, Queen Ifrica is preparing herself for the the launch of her new third album, Climb which will be released in the coming months.

Let’s talk to the beginning. When did you start to sing?
I started singing seriously around 2000 but I have been on many stages before that.
Who taught you about Music and about Rastafari Livity?
My father is Derrick Morgan living Ska Legend , so I guess you could say that I was born this way. My knowledge of Rastafari came from my mom “Mama Ita” as she was called.
Which was your first single you’ve released? When was the first time you did your first exhibition?
It was Royal love produced by Flames.
You did a lots of collaborations with Tony Rebel. Do you remember your first time you met him? How is your relationship with him? Which is the first single you’ve released together?
Well we have one collaboration song called ‘Bad Bwoy’, produced by Sugar Roy. My Relationship with Tony Rebel is Inspiring and uplifting, I have learn so much from him over the many years, and is still learning even to date,
Which are the main icons that influences you most? And musically speaking, which musical period you take ispiration from?
Garnet Silk, Bob Marley and I am inspired mostly by the old school Music, they were all about the message in the music.
It’s been 10 years since you’ve released “Fyah Mumma”, your first album published for Flames Productions Inc and 8 since your last album, “Montego Bay” for Vp Records.
Have you particular memories about their compositions/registrations?
Wish I had the cds here as I answer this one, but out of my head for Fyah Muma. Montego Bay however was VP and us along with penthouse and some great musicians .
And now you are preparing the launch your upcoming album. What should we expect from “Climb”? What kind of album it will be?
I can Tell You Some more about, Climb is about taking Charge of your life, of your surroundings, overcoming every or any abstacules that may be holding you back, by just climbing up out of it all: expect to Feel motivated at the End of Every Track!
You have published a single from Climb, “Trueversation” featuring Damian Marley. Can you explain what do you mean with this song and why you choose to sing this song with Damian?
With the influx of social media, people hardly ever talk to each other anymore. It’s almost always by phone or Internet. So we are saying come to my place, let’s sit inside or outside and just plain have a chat.
The difference in this case myself and gong are having a ‘truversation’ not a conversation, i love Gong and his music, and yes he is the Son of a legend!
Which are the new artists you think best represent the new wave of Roots Rock Reggae?
It’s a full package I will of to get back to you on that one.
And which foundation artists the new generations should take inspiration from?
All of them . They paved the way for all of us.
Are you preparing a tour for “Climb”? Which countries it will touch?
Hopefully as much as possible and yes we are preparing tours for Climb
